Time Difference

Croatia is in the Central European Time Zone (CET) so there is an hour’s time difference with the UK.

Money

The national currency is the Kuna, which is widely available in the UK. There are many foreign exchange agencies in Croatia itself so you may get better rates if you exchange in-country, although they are less commonplace on the islands. Many hotels, restaurants, shops and petrol stations across Croatia accept cards (MasterCard and Visa).

Electricity and Plugs

220 volts; European plug so make sure you take an adapter for any UK appliances.

Local Amenities

Opening times for shops vary across Croatia, with those along the coast generally having longer opening hours to cater to larger tourist numbers. Most shops are open Monday to Friday, from 8:00 to 19:00, and until 14:00 on Saturday. Shops can only open on Sundays in summer. Restaurants are generally open from around midday to midnight, with some closing on Sundays. Banks are generally open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 16:00.

Media

The three main TV broadcasters are the public service broadcaster, HRT, and the commercial broadcasters NovaTV and RTL. The three national television stations regularly offer foreign films in original version with subtitles. In terms of newspapers, the Jutarnji List is the largest (by circulation) broadsheet, while the tabloid 24 Sata is also very popular.

Post

Post offices are found in almost all villages, towns and cities (easily identified by their blue and yellow signs reading: HPT) and sell stamps, will exchange currency and offer telephone services. Regular hours are 7:00-14:00, Monday to Friday. However, in summer they are extended until 21:00 in major cities and tourist areas, and occasionally will open on Saturday morning. The post is generally pretty efficient in Croatia and post boxes are easily identified by their yellow colouring.
