Sitting slap-bang in the centre of Costa Rica, Poas Volcano is an active stratovolcano with a 8,848ft-tall peak that towers high above the surrounding landscape of dense forest and rolling hills. With well-maintained hiking trails and spectacular panoramic views from its observation deck, Poas Volcano has become one of the country’s most visited natural attractions. Its otherworldly landscapes are a labour of (mother nature's) love, crafted over time by a steady cloud of steam and gas emerging from the sulfuric lake in the crater. The region is home to a variety of ecosystems and their subsequent microclimates,
all ripe for exploring, including a cloud forest that shelters a range of plant and animal species (such as hummingbirds, toucans and orchids). At times, it’s possible to hike up to the crater and gaze down on the cyan lake in the centre, although the volcano’s safety is closely monitored due to its still active status. While the area surrounding Poas Volcano might not sound quite so exciting in comparison, the nearby coffee plantations and small villages ooze charm and are well worth a visit.
