With its extraordinary facade adorned with honeycomb-shaped windows and elegant arches, Hawa Mahal palace looks like it’s been plucked straight from a fairy-tale. This striking palace, which stands tall above the streets of Jaipur, was built in 1799, as an extension to the nearby City Palace in order to allow the ladies of the royal household to watch the life and processions of the city below. Constructed of pink and red sandstone — helping to cement Jaipur’s reputation as the ‘Pink City’ — the palace is decorated with intricate carvings and latticework and an impressive 953 small windows, called jharokhas,
which are designed to provide a cool breeze through the palace (hence its nickname: 'Palace of the Winds'). After exploring the ornate interiors, climb to the top of Hawa Mahal and you'll be rewarded with stunning views over Jantar Mantar and the City Palace in one direction and over Sireh Deori Bazaar in the other.
