Romania is bursting at the seams with medieval cities, ancient architecture and bucolic countryside, and it has a slew of legends and fairy-tales to match. During Romania walking holidays, you’ll be free to roam these breath-taking surroundings and hear about the nation’s myths and traditions along the way. To get a sense of the Transylvania countryside, Piatra Craiului National Park is a good starting point, and as you hike the well-trodden trails, you might even spot a bear or two. The rolling foothills of the Carpathian Mountains are also well-equipped for walkers, with plenty of footpaths criss-crossing its unfragmented forests.

The mountains take on a particularly appealing appearance when flecked with snow, and you can temporarily trade your walking boots for snowshoes to help you traverse Transylvania’s wintery wonderland. Walks can be interspersed with suitably spooky cultural activities, including exploring a bat cave and visiting Bran Castle, the fictional home of Count Dracula.
