Time Difference

Romania is two hours ahead of United Kingdom and the standard time is Eastern European Time (EET; UTC+02:00). Daylight saving time, which moves one hour ahead to UTC+03:00 is observed from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October.

Money

The Romanian currency is the leu or RON. Most major credit cards are accepted in banks, most hotels, restaurants and shops. You will also find ATMs enabling you to withdraw currency. Banks are open on weekdays from 9am to 12pm, but private exchange offices remain open until 6pm in the evenings and on weekends.

Electricity

Romania operates on a 230V supply voltage and there are two associated plug types, types C and F. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins and plug type F is the plug which has two round pins with two earth clips on the side. While you won’t need a converter, you will need a travel adapter.

Shops and Amenities

In large cities, department stores (super or hypermarkets) are open all week, including weekends. The smaller ones are usually open on weekdays between 10am and 8pm and close on Sundays. You can also find many shops open 24 hours. Banks are generally open from 9am to 3pm/4pm. Most museums are open from 9am to 5pm, except Mondays.

Media

Romanian press had experienced a period of media control prior to the fall of communism in 1989, after which there was a surge in Romanian newspapers, TV channels and radio stations. Now, the Romanian press offers papers like the daily published Adevarul, Curierul National and Evenimentul zile. As for radio and television channels, they have increased in number and have diversified too. The National Radio Company offers three main stations, and the National Television Company has three broadcasting channels (TVR1, TVR2 and TVR International) and local studios in the main towns (Iasi, Cluj, Timisoara). Among the private radio channels are Radio Contact, Delta, Romantic and Uniplus. The best-known private television channels are PRO TV, PRO TV International and Antena 1. TVR International and PRO TV International are also broadcast abroad. In addition to this, there are many cable and satellite operators which ensure the transmission of many foreign channels.

The Post Office is open Monday to Friday from 8am to 8pm and Saturday from 8am to 2pm. It is closed on Sundays.
