Prepare to switch off from the modern world on the secluded Bolivian island of Isla del Sol on Lake Titicaca. The name translates to 'Island of the Sun'—and for good reason. Incan legend states the sun was born here and would rise every morning over this very spot. It is considered to be one of the most sacred sites in South America due to its many ruins from pre-Columbian times. Isla del Sol is the largest of three islands in Lake Titicaca, spanning around five miles long and four miles wide. The only way to get around Isla del Sol is on foot, following a network of rocky trails (the island has no motorised vehicles).
