The Big Apple has something for everyone to sink their teeth into. Movie lovers can visit the sites of their favourite films (Times Square, we’re looking at you); culture vultures can admire their favourite artists at The Met, MoMA and the Guggenheim; and music maestros can hear everything from in-your-face rock shows at Williamsburg dives to lavish opera productions at the Lincoln Center. Trendsetters and fashion-wannabes can shop 'til they drop on the streets of Manhattan while people-watchers can feast their eyes on the sheer variety of people and places encased within this exceptionally eclectic city. If you have a love of history, make sure to pay a visit to Ellis Island, home to the city’s former immigration inspection station that saw 12 million immigrants passing through its doors from 1892 until 1954. And for more recent history, pay your respects at the Ground Zero memorial and learn about the struggle and resilience of this city and its people.

For food, dive into the vibrant Chinatown and fill up on dumplings, take a walking tour around Harlem and sample some of its famous fried chicken, fill up on salt beef bagels in Midtown, grab a slice of pizza pie under the Brooklyn Bridge, or go for a gastronomical treat in trendy Chelsea

There are always new places to discover in New York City, but heading across the bridge to Brooklyn is a must. Brooklyn is now the place to which modish Manhattanites are lured like moths to the flame. So how did the originally Dutch 'Broken Land', previously famed for mobsters (as in Goodfellas) and Travoltas (as in Saturday Night Fever) become the spiritual home of the hipster? Plenty of reasons, from the prosaic - property prices for warehouses and brownstones alike are (or were) way down on those on Manhattan - to the rise and rise of local boy Shawn 'Jay-Z' Carter and the success of Lena Dunham's Brooklyn-based Girls. Whatever the reasons, while the Beckhams were laughed out of town when eldest boy Brooklyn was born, the decision now looks pretty prescient. Wander the streets of Brooklyn Heights with its rows of old brick houses born at the dawn of the 19th century, sample craft beer and gourmet fast food in Williamsburg, and head south to Brooklyn’s colourful Coney Island to ride the famous Cyclone roller coaster.

For sports fans, a trip to see the New York Yankees or Knicks playing at home is an incredible experience.
