TOUCHDOWN IN LANZAROTE
Your family adventure to Lanzarote starts today. After a bit of chaos at home making sure the youngsters are packed and ready to go, head to the airport, whizz through security and relax in the airport lounge with some nibbles and refreshments as you await departure. Flight time to Arrecife in Lanzarote is about four hours, enough time to get stuck into your holiday read while the younger members of your clan are bushing up on their Spanish (or, more likely, watching a movie). On arrival, collect your spacious, family-friendly hire car and drive ten minutes to Macher, a traditional Canarian village surrounded by nature. Here you’ll check into your first hotel: a rustic farmhouse that’s been renovated to include contemporary comforts while retaining its original charm. Once you’ve settled in and freshened up, head down to the hotel lounge to meet our local Concierge. This is a great opportunity for you to get a general introduction to the island and the wider archipelago. You can discuss weather patterns, distances between points of interest, the best roads to use, the must-dos to weave into your itinerary, the best hiking trails and plenty more.
ARTY TOUR OF LANZAROTE
The next three days are yours to spend discovering Macher and its surroundings. After yesterday’s conversation with our local Concierge, you should have a list of exciting things to see and do. You can relax on the many beaches, hike in the hills and play in the never-ending sand dunes. On one of the days, you’ll be heading out on a tour across the island with a friendly local guide. You’ll be following in the footsteps of César Manrique (1919-1992), a Spanish artist, architect, painter and sculptor who made the preservation of the island a priority. He took it upon himself to protect the riches of his native land, which led to him reviving the World Prize for Ecology and Tourism in 1978. You’ll visit his informative foundation, before heading to the Jameos de Agua Art Centre and finally his house and studio.
TRAVEL FURTHER INLAND
The time has come to bid farewell to Macher and embark further into the rugged interior hinterland. Your next destination is a splendid country house in San Bartolomé, a charming white-washed town surrounded by rolling hills, where you’ll be staying for the next three nights. Spend the rest of today settling into your new home; we recommend heading out for a walk around town before heading back to the guesthouse for an evening of rest and relaxation in the garden.
GET ACTIVE
The final two days of your adventure in Lanzarote is all about getting active and out in nature. On one of the days you’ll have the opportunity to head into the heart of the breathtaking Timanfaya National Park for a hike with an experienced guide. The park is home to the impressive Montañas del Fuego, which are still subject to volcanic activity today. The landscapes were formed by a series of eruptions at the beginning of the 18th century which drastically altered the topography of the island and left a quarter of the area engulfed under a thick mantle of lava and ash. If the little ones (or the adults, for that matter) are keen to try their hand at surfing, then we can arrange for you to have a private surfing lesson on one of our favourite beaches.
ADIOS CANARY ISLANDS
Sadly the time has come to bid farewell to the balmy Canary Islands and embark on the journey home. After one last delicious breakfast this morning, hop back into your hire car and drive to the nearby airport. Drop off your car, whizz through security and take the opportunity to stock up on any last-minute souvenirs before boarding a four-hour flight back to the UK.
A la carte
PRIVATE SURFING LESSON
Famara beach is a great playground for practicing or learning to surf. Along the wild dunes that stretch from the village of Famara to the foot of the Risco mountain, surfers can be spotted day in and day out perfecting their art. Head out into gentle waves with a qualified and experienced surfing instructor to try it for yourselves.
