Ancient Architecture and Cultural Hot Spots: A Luxury City Break to Rome

Kate L is here to help give you the inside track.

Such is the breadth and depth of history, art and culture in Rome that you could easily dedicate a Big Short Break to one of many themes. However, our favourite Rome trip still always remains one that gives you a little bit of everything. To give you an idea we've come up with the classic three day whistle stop tour.

Itinerary at a Glance:

  • Marvel at the intricacy of Michelangelo's masterpiece ceiling in the Sistine Chapel.
  • Eat and drink your way around the bohemian Trastevere district.
  • Take a guided tour of the ancient city centre.

All of the holidays we create are completely tailor-made to you

This sample itinerary is intended to give you a flavour of what we can do

Day 1: Flight & Ancient City Tour

After your flight, arrive into central Rome via a private airport transfer and check in to your hotel. Then, bags dumped and sun cream applied, head out and start exploring Rome.

First stop - lunch. We provide all of our clients with a handy destination dossier containing our recommendations for the best places to eat so you can avoid all the classic touristy haunts and head straight for an authentic restaurant, safe in the knowledge that you're really living like a local. Our team will happily make reservations for you prior to departure and while you're on holiday, or leave you to be spontaneous, whichever you prefer. There's no such thing as light lunch here so embrace the indulgence and remember the saying - when in Rome! Feeling fully refuelled it's time for an afternoon of exploration. Despite the wealth of things to do and sites to see, Rome is a surprisingly small city, and often best explored on foot. For first timers it's probably best to start at the beginning with a tour of the ancient city centre - the Forum, Palatine Hill and Colosseum. We will arrange for a private guide to meet you and their local expertise will bring these ancient sites to life with fantastical tales and impressive historic details. Head back to your hotel in the late afternoon and, after a quick shower and change, it's back out for dinner (cue our handy dossier again).

Leave the diet at the plane door because Rome exemplifies everything that's wonderful about Italian food and drink: pasta, pizza or simply prosecco. Whatever your palate desires the Italians sure know how to please.

Additional Activities

  • Explore the catacombs
  • Visit Rome's Renaissance palaces

Day 2: Vatican City

Enjoy a lie in and a leisurely breakfast this morning, you've got a busy day ahead.

Pay a visit to Vatican City. Aside from keeping an eye out for the Pope, make sure you see St Peter's Basilica, the enormous but perfectly proportioned church (surprisingly it's not technically a cathedral) and, of course, the Sistine Chapel, home to Michelangelo's masterpiece ceiling.

'As evening settles in, sip an Aperol Spritz or two and then explore bohemian Trastevere - the old Jewish Quarter and home to many of the city’s best restaurants - in search of the perfect Italian dinner.'

Additional Activities

  • Visit the Spanish Steps
  • See the iconic Trevi Fountain

Day 3: Shopping

It might be your final day but the trip isn't over yet.

A visit to the effortlessly fashionable Italian capital wouldn't be complete without a spot of shopping; so whether you treat yourself to a new Prada handbag, a classic Italian scarf, or just a great bottle of wine, make sure you do go home with some goodies. After one last leisurely lunch and a gelato in the sun, head back to your hotel where a private transfer will take you to the airport ready to catch your flight home.

Additional Activities

  • Explore the beautiful Borghese Gardens
