Romance and Roaming in Italy: London to Lake Como by Train

Today you have the entire day to spend at your leisure. After your day of travel yesterday, you're probably looking to stretch your legs and get your muscles moving. Lake Como, often considered to be the ‘jewel of the Italian Alps’, has some superb cycling paths hugging its shore, which boast beautiful views across the lake from a range of vantage points. Cycling here is leisurely, with minimal inclines, perfect for getting out on a warm sunny day. If cycling isn't your thing, maybe climbing up San Martino's hill would suit more. The climb is relatively easy, and you'll be rewarded with spectacular views across the lake. For an even more leisurely option, you can take a ferry around the lake or the cable car up to the town of Brunate. Nicknamed ‘the Balcony of the Alps’, Brunate is situated over 2000ft above sea level and blessed with some atmospheric panoramic points, from which you can see the outline of Como’s historic centre, the ancient Roman castrum and a view over the Alps and the Brianza plain. Today you will be taken on a two-hour private tour of Villa del Balbianello, alongside an expert guide. Set among cypress and cedar trees on the shores of Lake Como, the 18th century residence contains collections of Asian and African art. A wealthy entrepreneur named Guido Monzino bought the villa in 1974, and alongside the art collections there are also displays of artefacts acquired by Monzino during his expeditions. These include Inuit sculptures, memorabilia from his 1971 expedition to the North Pole and an extensive collection of maps and books. Following this cultural experience, you’re free to spend the rest of your day exploring Como’s old centre, visiting one of the nearby picturesque villages and perhaps sipping on a martini (or your drink of choice) while enjoying the surrounding views.

Get out and about today to make the most of your last full day in Italy! Maybe go out for another walk and bike ride, or spend the day enjoying all that your luxurious hotel has to offer. If you haven’t yet made it up the cable car to Brunate, this could be an option for today, before treating yourself to a massage at the hotel, which will leave you feeling sublime and revitalised. In the mid-afternoon, spend some time letting the sun kiss your skin, before sinking into the pool to cool off.

Finally, in the evening, indulge in - arguably - Italy's main attraction; the food. With a range of dining options, you'll be spoilt for choice. Think pizza, pasta, grilled meat and fish, all accompanied by an eclectic selection of Italian wines.
