The Indonesian archipelago consists of a sprawling chain of tropical volcanic islands comprising one of the most diverse and exotic nations on Earth.
With over 17,000 islands, Indonesia is easily the world's largest island chain. From the north-west tip of Sumatra to the south-eastern corner of Irian Jaya, the archipelago spans over 3,000 miles and islands as culturally diverse as Hindu Bali, Christian Sumba and Flores and myriad Muslim gems such as Lombok, Java.
Indonesia offers luxury holidayers stunning beaches, jungle, volcanoes, crystal waters, rich marine life, numerous cultural attractions, its own highly regarded cuisine and even dragons in the shape of Komodo's most famous residents.
There's more. Indonesia is perfect honeymoon or romantic holiday territory, and especially in our summer as an alternative seriously worth considering in comparison to Europe. The neighbouring islands of Bali & Lombok in particular both offer superb luxury hotels, watersports galore and cultural highlights aplenty if you can drag yourself off that sunlounger.
Java, the capital island, is something of a 'deeper cut' that will fully reward any return visitors to Indonesia or first-timers with more time on their hands. If you want to understand what makes Indonesia tick, then Java is an essential part of any luxury holiday itinerary. Likewise, for a sense of the country in the raw, Komodo and Flores are spectacularly beautiful and an insight into authentic Indonesia, which might see you spend the night in a rustic guesthouse rather than a seven star luxury hotel but appreciate the experience all the more.
Finally, we couldn't talk about luxury holidays to Indonesia without mentioning the diving, which is some of the very best in the world. The Indonesian region of Raja Ampat is the centre of the almost mythical Coral Triangle - regarded by those in the know (including our dive division Original Diving) as the best diving destination in the world. Some accolade, and a region best explored from aboard a luxury yacht plying the waters between beautiful - and often completely deserted - islands.
Original Travel consultants have travelled widely throughout the islands visiting the latest immaculate hotels, diving from luxury liveaboards, surfing and sampling all the best spa treatments. All in the name of luxury holiday research, naturally. The team can recommend the place to take in a spot of buffalo racing (Jembrana in Bali) or the restaurant that serves the most delectable Nasi Goreng in Indonesia (we're keeping that one up our sleeves for the time being).
The bucket list beckons…
