Luxury Hotels on Gozo

San Andrea

First up on our list of Gozo luxury hotels is San Andrea. The hotel's rooms come with en-suite bathrooms, internet connection and satellite TV, and most have views over Xlendi Bay.

Facilities include a roof terrace, a bar and a restaurant overlooking the bay. Other hotel services available include in-room beauty treatments and massages, and private guided tours of this small, unspoiled island.

Gozo's reefs and visibility make it a good diving location and there are three dive schools in Xlendi.

Why We Love It

A modern, reasonably priced three-star hotel located on the seafront on the south coast of Gozo and ideal for some summer sun on a budget.

Ta' Cenc

After a recent $2.5 million refurbishment, Ta' Cenc may now regain its rightful position as the top luxury hotel in Gozo.

With the hotel located on the highest point on the island that should have been the case anyway, but years of neglect and under investment, and the arrival of the Kempinski San Lawrenz, saw Ta' Cenc in a parlous state.

Now the hotel is determined to scale the metaphorical heights, and we watch developments with interest. The majority of the investment went on the rooms, with the public areas and pool elegantly laid out.

The 83 rooms themselves include a number of conical roofed trulli-style bungalows in the gardens, alongside rooms in the main building.

For lunch and dinner, the Il-Carrubo restaurant serves Italian and Gozitan specialities. The scenic terraced Peppi's Bar has superb views out across cliffs to the sea below and serves fresh fish and grilled meats, salads, ice creams and fresh fruit as well as cocktails.

There are two pools, one of which includes a mini pool for children and a hydro message Jacuzzi. There is also a private 'beach' located in the rocky fjord inlet of Mgarr ix-Xini. There's a bar and restaurant serving grilled fresh fish and meats, and sunbeds, umbrellas, and shower/loo facilities. A minibus service takes guests directly to the beach in just five minutes.

There is plenty else to do at Ta' Cenc, including tennis, billiards, table tennis and spa treatments and massages at the wellness centre, and with 160 hectares of land and beautiful cliff-top views, walks are highly recommended.

Why We Love It

Maltese is a highly unusual blend of languages, incorporating words from several languages including Arabic, Italian and English, and a number of surprising pronunciations - for example the hotel is pronounced Ta Chench.

Kempinski San Lawrenz

Our final Gozo luxury hotel is Kempinski San Lawrenz. The resort is located with views over the Mediterranean and is filled with subtropical gardens and rustic styled rooms.

The modern rooms and suites all have beautiful views over the pool or gardens and many have a private balcony or terrace. The spa is one of the most comprehensive in Europe, offering specialist Ayurvedic treatments and marine therapy.

There are two dining options, one more formal than the other, serving Mediterranean cuisine with a focus on Maltese and Italian ingredients, you can also grab a light bite or drink from the pool bar and cafe.

There are many facilities at the resort, including three swimming pools, kids club and tennis courts as well as guided hikes and bike rides. Or you could hire a scooter to explore the island and the nearby beaches.

Why We Love It

This five-star resort has the largest Ayurvedic spa in Europe.
