Luxury Croatia Holidays: An Overview

Croatia is one of those holiday destinations that feel like it should be a well-kept secret so that we can have it all to ourselves, but at at the same we can't help but gush about how beautiful the mediterranean country is.

Original Travel has been in love with Croatia since we launched back in 2003, with its rather cool combination of glitz, glamour and tradition with undulating plains of greenery and deep blue waters.

Whilst the younger 'summer-in-Europe' crowd flock to Croatia's mainland and islands for popular music festivals, the country is also a great luxury holiday choice for families, couples and sun-seekers alike. The Croatia luxury holiday scene has something for everyone - aside from magnificent beaches, sailing opportunities, delicious fresh food and fabulous hotels and resorts, there are historic sites aplenty to explore and cute cobbled alleyways to get lost in.

We pioneered sea kayaking around the Elapahiti Islands off Dubrovnik and have revisited several times as new regions, such as trendy island hangout Hvar and gourmet haven Istria, are announced as the next big thing on the Croatia luxury holiday scene.

Dubrovnik remains undeniably one of Europe's great treasures (although it can get very busy during peak season, we still love sea kayaking around the nearby Elapahiti Islands), and the Dalmatian coastline as a whole - especially when explored from a yacht - is very special indeed with its azure water, island-filled horizon and dramatic mountain backdrop.

To the north, gourmet-haven Istria is set to become a firm favourite thanks to its Italianate influences (of the edible variety, particularly) and yet more beautiful coastline, as well as quaint scenes of local fishermen freeing their nets for a morning catch.

The Original Travel team have explored Croatia first hand and can recommend all the finest luxury hotels along the coast, and arrange anything from expertly guided kayak safaris to luxurious and reliable yacht rental from either Split or Dubrovnik. Rest assured, your Croatia luxury holiday will be one to remember.

Kayak Around Lokrum Island

Set off from Dubrovnik Old Town and paddle around nearby Lokrum Island in kayaks with a guide, exploring the caves around the edge of the island before stepping on land and wandering around this so-called 'Island of Love'. Then head back to the mainland to discover the hidden cave beach, Betina, and enjoy a spot of snorkelling, before paddling back through the impressive city walls of Dubrovnik to the port.

Visit Plitvice Lakes

Plitvice Lakes National Park is the most popular tourist attraction in Croatia for good reason. There are sixteen stunning lakes interconnected by waterfalls which are set in beautiful woodland, and can be explored by guided hikes, cycle rides or even by quad bike. Despite the name, the lakes actually only cover a small portion of the national park, with the rest made up of pretty forest and grassland.

Explore Istria

Istria, the peninsula in the north-east of the country, is where to head to experience the real charm and character of Croatia. Explore beautiful Tuscan-esque countryside and hilltop towns, and picturesque beaches and fishing ports, including the harbour town of Rovinj. The region also boasts the best food in Croatia thanks to its connection to neighbouring Italy.
