So, where to go on your European walking holiday? The continent
is crisscrossed by wonderful and well-maintained walking trails,
but there are certain destinations that hiking to a higher plain
altogether. Chief among these is the Dolomite
Mountain region of northern Italy, where the stunning alpine
scenery is complemented by charming rifugios (mountain
refuges) in which to stay, and fabulous hearty local cuisine. To up
the ante further, weave some of the region's legendary via
ferrate (literally: iron ways; actually: metal ladders and
walkways) into the equation and you have a European walking holiday
with a difference.
Our next recommendation would be to go walking in the Julian Alps,
and particularly in
Triglav National Park, in neighbouring Slovenia. The park is
one of the prettiest Alpine settings in Europe, home to towering
peaks, rivers, forests and lovely meadows filled with wildflowers
in spring and summer.
And then there's Corsica,
home to arguably the most famous walking route in Europe: the GR20,
which traverses the length of this mountainous Mediterranean
island, taking 15 days to complete. The good news is that the
island is also home to a host of other spectacular and shorter
walks, from circular one-day hikes to longer point-to-point walks
across multiple days. Whichever you choose, you'll be walking
through some of the most beautiful mountain and coastal landscapes
in Europe.
Then there are the levadas (canals with adjoining trails) to traipse along on the island of Madeira; the trek through Vikos Gorge in Epirus in Greece, the Piatra Craiului National Park in Romania's Transylvania and many, many more European destinations waiting for your walking boots.
