Away from the glitz and glamour of Costa Smeralda, Sardinia’s mix of wild mountains and white sandy beaches, not to mention the gloriously blue seas, make it the ideal spot for a luxury family holiday.
Sardinia's reputation as a grown-up playground is pretty well
cemented, but it is also an ideal spot for a week of family fun.
Rolling hills, crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and
flamingos - yes, flamingos! - combined with some excellent child
(and parent) friendly hotels and Italians' world-renowned love for
bambini have made the island a firm favourite among the parents at
Original Travel HQ and our clients, there really is something for
everyone. Two of our favourite family-friendly hotels in Italy,
Chia Laguna and
Grand Hotel Poltu Quatu, sit at opposite end of the island -
the former in the south and the latter in the north. The two mix
perfectly for a week of excitement, adventure, and - for mum and
dad, at least - some light oligarch spotting.
In the north of the island, the yacht-set's spot of choice, is
home to uber-flashy hotels and marina's where Europe's super-rich
moor-up for the evening, or longer. Away from the glitz and glamour
are some of Italy's best beaches, many of which are almost
completely deserted - so perfect for an epic sandcastle building
competition and some beach cricket. The south of the island is
slightly wilder and woollier than futher north, home to secret
coves and wild beaches for Swallows & Amazons-esque afternoons.
Further in land the magnificent granite interior is begging to be
discovered, with 'Europe's Grand Canyon,' the Gola di Gorropu
perfect to hike with older children, and plenty of ruins fit for
exploration by budding Indiana Joneses.
If you can't decide where you want to stay, we recommend taking
a boat -
Blue Deer is our favourite - and combining the best of both
worlds. As a family you can enjoy the best of Italian home cooking
as you and your water babies splash around in the sea, exploring
hidden coves and crystal-clear waters in total privacy as they take
your fancy while your crew navigates you to the best bits of the
island and rustles up three marvellous meals a day.
