Family City Breaks

Cities may sometimes mean museums and shopping, but they also mean bright lights and big adventures!

We have selected our favourite family holiday city destinations, from the cobbled streets of Madeira to the slick streets of Dubai!

The thought of a family city break may fill you with dread: how to find restaurants with food the children won't turn their noses up at, site-seeing that won't make them grumble, and hotels that will suit all of you? Well, that's where we come in. Our regional experts know the places that will go down positively with the kids (as well as the ones that won't…), while making sure you get a proper break too. And with 33 Original Travel children (and counting) we know a thing or two about how to make this happen.

Rome might just be our favourite city in Europe so it's even more brilliant that is also works for families. And any country that predominantly serves pizza, pasta and ice cream is bound to go down well with children. So even if they turn their noses up at sight-seeing, remember that sampling the local cuisine is just as much a part of the cultural immersion of visiting a new city as a museum can be.

From the history and culture of Rome to the futuristic skyscrapers of one of our other favourite family-friendly cities: Dubai. Dubai is almost other-worldly in its architecture and man-made islands, and there is no shortage of things to see and do here either. Gawp at the world's tallest building (although good luck trying to get the whole thing in one photo), explore the souqs, relax on the beach or even take the children skiing in the indoor ski slope found in one of the largest shopping malls in the world.

Dubai and Rome might be almost as different as you can get in terms of two family city breaks, but they are both brilliant examples of how a city can make a perfect destination for a family vacation, with enough to keep both parents and children happy.
