Tucked away near the Mexican border and still largely covered in thick vegetation, the ancient Mayan ruins of El Mirador are believed by many to be the original cradle of Mayan civilisation. This is undoubtedly one of the best examples of the architectural and spiritual accomplishments of the pre-Classic Mayan society, and perhaps the most exotic and mysterious of the sites around Peten. The site stretches out between two enormous pyramids that face each other imposingly across the forest. From the top of either of the main temples you can see the tops of others poking through the canopy all around you.
El Mirador is only accessible by foot or on a mule, and the core of the site covers an astonishing six square miles.
