Sri Lanka and the ICC Cricket World Cup

Sri Lanka, a land of gems, elephants, curry and... cricket!

A land of gems, elephants, curry and, of course, cricket!

Next year cricket enthusiasts from around the world will have their eyes firmly fixed on this idyllic island for the ICC Cricket World Cup, which begins in February. The tournament is being hosted alongside neighbouring cricketing nations, India and Bangladesh. Within Sri Lanka, the fixtures will be held at the Premadasa stadium in Colombo, and the two new stadiums in Hambantota and Pallekelle. The location of these new stadiums is great for travellers with an interest in the sport who will conveniently be able to include a match or two in their travel itinerary.

Exploring Sri Lanka

The region between Colombo and Hambantota is home to many of the island's best hotels such as The Fortress in Koggala or Amanwella in Tangalle, some of the most beautiful beaches such as Unawatuna and Mirissa, and spectacular attractions such as the old Dutch fort at Galle and, a little beyond Hambantota, Yala National Park. The other stadium in Pallekelle is located close to the old Sinhalese capital of Kandy - a diverse, creative, and cultural hub with some exceptional hotels such as The Kandy House. It's a great base for expeditions into the tea country where, at places like Horton Plains and Ella, the scenery is breathtaking. This is a great opportunity to enjoy a wonderful sport in a truly unique and delightful country and you can be pretty certatin that rain won't affect play!
