Comprised of Matemwe Lodge, Matemwe Retreat and the Matemwe Beach House, this property on Zanzibar’s northeast coast suits everyone from families to couples and honeymooners.
Matemwe Lodge consists of 12 en-suite chalets, set in lush tropical gardens, and each with a private veranda and hammocks from which to enjoy the views of the Indian Ocean. Each is decorated in traditional Zanzibar style - think exposed beams, white washed walls and colourful throws - and is bursting with character.
There is a brand new multi level pool at the main lodge, and set high on the cliff tops it has spectacular views out to sea. The ultra cool dhow shaped bar is perfect for evening cocktails, and the open-air restaurant serves delicious freshly caught seafood.
Just north of the main Matemwe Lodge lies Matemwe Retreat, a secluded hideaway with just four individual villas, each with private plunge pools and private butler service. Set just off the beach, it too has fantastic views out to the ocean. In room massages are available, and guests are free to use the facilities at the main lodge, such as the pool, restaurant and spa.
Located opposite the Mnemba Atoll, guests of the retreat have spectacular diving and snorkelling on their doorstep. A huge variety of marine life is found in these waters, from colourful reef fish to whale sharks, dolphins and even humpback whales at certain times of year.
For ultimate privacy, the Beach House is the ticket. Perfect for families or groups, it has just three bedrooms and is a self-contained house with private pool. Again, guests have access to all of the lodge's facilities, yet with the benefits of a private villa.
Activities available from the lodge, villas and beach house include diving, snorkelling, kayaking, bike rides and reef walking. Visits to local villages and markets, spice tours and day trips to historic Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, can also be arranged. However, the best beaches are found on the northeast coast of Zanzibar, so relaxing on the white sands with a book is more than acceptable too.
The north east coast of Zanzibar is renowned for its pristine white sand beaches and gin clear waters - so sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling are the order of the day.
