Route
BRITTANY BOUND
Your five-day escape to northern France’s beautiful coastline starts today. Head to the airport and whizz through security before enjoying some nibbles and refreshments in the airport lounge as you await departure. Flight time to Rennes is an hour and a half, just enough time to get stuck into your holiday read. On arrival, collect your hire car and drive to your first destination in Brittany: the charming seaside town of Trébeurden, just over two hours away. Settle in for two nights in a beautifully decorated beachside guesthouse and spend the rest of today soaking in your new French surroundings before tucking into a delicious meal this evening.
SAIL ALONG THE PINK GRANITE COAST
Nicknamed the ‘Pink Granite Coast’ in homage to its beautifully coloured rocks, the stretch of coastline from Trebeurden to Perros-Guirec offers no shortage of scenic delights. The pink colour of the rocks is due to the presence of iron, which oxidises when it comes into contact with oxygen. Today, you’ll be boarding a traditional sailboat with a private skipper to admire this jagged coastline and its many hidden coves from the ocean, learning some classic manoeuvres along the way. Depending on the tides, we can also arrange for you to head out with a local guide to learn the art of shore fishing for crustaceans and shellfish.
TRAVEL ALONG THE NORTH SHORE
After a tasty breakfast this morning, made with fresh local produce, hop back into your hire car and drive two hours along the north coast of the peninsula to the beautiful port city of Saint-Malo. Check in for two nights in a spacious guesthouse near the beach then spend the rest of today settling into your new home: take a stroll down to your local beach, head out to a nearby deli for an aperitif or simply kick back and relax in the hotel.
WALKING TOUR OF SAINT-MALO
Fuel up on breakfast at the hotel this morning as today you’ll be discovering the sights of Saint-Malo on foot in the company a knowledgeable local guide. Once a legendary maritime city that fought away enemy ships in times of war, Saint-Malo is now a charming port city adored for its regattas and other nautical races. High ramparts surround the beautiful cobbled streets of the old town, which are lined with the homes of shipowners and workshops of local craftsmen. When you’re ready to give your feet a rest, stroll over to Chateaubriand Square to enjoy a refreshing drink and some nibbles in one of the many elegant terraced eateries. This afternoon is yours to play with. You can head back to the hotel for some down time before dinner this evening or we can arrange for you to sample some ultra-fresh oysters washed down with a crisp glass of white wine in the bay of Mont Saint-Michel. For dinner tonight you have a table reserved at a charming restaurant on one of the oldest streets of the city. The kitchen here is run by a talented chef who keeps things interesting by changing the restaurant’s short menu every three weeks. In addition to the mouthwatering gourmet dishes, the atmosphere is warm and welcoming, and the design is effortlessly elegant – the perfect way to finish your whistle-stop tour of Brittany.
AU REVOIR BRITTANY
Sadly, the time has come to bid Brittany a fond au revoir and embark on the journey home. Drive one hour back to the airport in Rennes to catch a quick one-hour flight back to the UK.
A la carte
SHORE FISHING ON THE PINK GRANITE COAST
When the sea recedes, large rocks (that are usually submerged) and long stretches of sand called foreshore appear. This is the perfect time for a spot of shore fishing. Head out with an experienced local guide to learn the art of fishing for crustaceans and shellfish directly from the shore. This activity is dependent on the time and strength of the tides.
CANCALE OYSTER TASTING
Head to the beautiful bay of Mont Saint-Michel in Cancale to learn all about the history and breeding of the locally produced flat oyster. Round off the visit with a tasting of oysters alongside a glass of white wine.
