Near to Mexico City lies the unmissable – and enormous – pre-Aztec site of San Juan Teotihuacan. This UNESCO World Heritage site is just over an hour's drive from Mexico city, making it a must visit in our eyes. Archaeologists date the ancient city back to 100BC, with construction continuing through to 250AD. At its peak, it is believed that Teotihuacan was the largest city in pre-Columbian America, and the sixth largest settlement in the world.
Explore the impressive pre-Aztec pyramids of the Sun and Moon, as well as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl, and stop at the holiest place of Catholic worship in Latin America, the shrine of Guadalupe. Teotihuacan remained a site of Aztec pilgrimage for centuries after its collapse in the 8th century, and even in its present day state, it's clear to see why.
